Arthur Van de Velde

Antwerp (°1998)

Arthur Van de Velde (Antwerp, BE) starts from a sculptural perspective. As a young artist, he has a strong affinity for stone cutting and metal working, which immediately becomes the starting point for a unique artistic practice. At the heart of his work, Van de Velde explores the boundaries between aesthetics and functionality. Outside the walls of the studio begins an uninhibited adventure that results as a unification of artwork and artist. On the one hand, sculpture in its traditional sense comes into play. Here matter and form are cast together into a unique whole that translates into more abstract work.  As a second direction, Van de Velde gives a functional meaning to sculptural objects.

The last of these comes about organically – in the first instance – as a solution for the heavy weight of his sculptural work.Transportation takes on an increasingly prominent role in the artist’s practice. Starting with a self-created trailer, quickly followed by a canoe and most recently a boat made of iron and wood. All with the idea of transporting his own creations from point a to point b. Described by the artist as an action, the transport is now part of the artwork. The artwork with functional and aesthetic value that inevitably has a story attached to it.
Arthur graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 2022.
